British Institute 2026 – Scottish Research: The Fundamentals and Beyond

Are you an experienced researcher, but new to Scottish research? Or maybe you are familiar with the basic Scottish records but want to dig deeper and learn what else is out there. In either case, this course is for you. We will address the fundamental research records, showing how and when to use them, digging deeper to understand how and why the records were created, learning how to get the most out of them. We will go beyond the commonly used records to see what else has been created, learn how to find these records for your geographic location, and determine whether to search them online or as original records. The sessions will show worked examples of how to search, use and understand the records. For those who get excited about a specific set of records and want to dig deeper, there will be lots of recommended websites and bibliographic recommendations.
