British Institute FAQs

How do I pay for BI?

You may pay by PayPal, debit, or credit card on our website store, or by check made payable to ISBGFH and mailed to our treasurer (see below).

Note that PayPal will process other forms of payment, so if you are paying by debit or credit card, you do not need to have a PayPal account to use PayPal’s service to register for BI. 

If you would like to pay by check, download the form below, fill it out, and mail to:
ISBGFH 1312 17th Street #1751, Denver, CO 80202 (USA). Your payment should be received no later than 1 September, 2024.

Please note which courses you are registering for (Australia, Everyday Life in England, Quakers), and whether you will be attending in-person and/or receiving recording links, along with your payment. You may also join for a discount.


Recording BI FAQs

If I purchase access to recordings, when will they be available for viewing?

Recordings will be available the Monday after British Institute ends, 21 October, 2024. The associated syllabi will also be available at that time. If you attended BI in person, you will be provided with optional recording and syllabus links for the course that you attended.

Recordings will be available for viewing and the syllabus will be available for downloading through 31 December, 2024.


In-person BI FAQs

What are the dates for British Institute 2024?

Meet ‘n Greet, 6:30 p.m. Sunday, 13 October 2024 with classes running from 14 – 18 October 2024, 8 a.m. to noon (Mountain Daylight Time)

Are there any additional fees or charges?

If you are attending in person, the fee does not include travel to and from Salt Lake City, hotel stay, food or local transportation costs.

If I change my mind or something comes up, can I get a refund?

Cancellation policy – A refund will be issued upon written request / email request to the Institute Director before September 30, 2024 at 11:59pm Mountain Daylight Time. There will be a $50 service charged for canceling. Beginning October 1, 2024, no refunds will be issued. Registrations are not transferable to another person or for future events.

I am a beginner to genealogy. May I attend?

Each course displays a skill level under the course name. Beginners might also take some basic free courses through FamilySearch.org. If you have questions, contact our Institute Director at institutedirectorisbgfh@gmail.com.

How many classes can I register for?

  • You may only attend one class in person.
  • You may purchase an additional in-person course (or courses) for a friend or partner.
  • You may purchase access to one or more recordings.

If, for example, you are interested in all three courses, you might purchase one in-person course (which also comes with a recording) and access to two recordings; or, if you are unable to attend in person, you may certainly purchase access to all three recordings.

If you purchase more than one in-person course because you are buying for a partner or friend, please provide additional information about the attendee(s) in the Order Notes section of the checkout page. You may also reach out to the institute director with questions.

Do ISBGFH members receive a referral reward for referring a non-member friend to British Institute 2024?

Are there any handouts or prerequisites? What can I expect to receive?

A robust handout will be sent as a PDF for you to download and print prior to the start of the British Institute in person classes. Any other prerequisites are based on instructor preferences, and details will be sent in advance of BI courses beginning.

Will we have access to class lists and contact information for the instructors?

Instructors will offer a sign up sheet for those interested in being on the class contact list, and the completed list will be shared with the class. Contact information for instructors will be included on course materials as well as the class contact list.

Location and Lodging

When in person, British Institute is held annually at the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah, just steps away from the FamilySearch Library. A block of rooms has been reserved for registered attendees on a first-come, first-served basis. To receive the hotel discount, please call Mr. Williams at (801) 606-2410 and state you are attending British Institute.

The classrooms and Sunday evening Meet ‘n Greet are located in the hotel. The hotel also has an indoor parking garage.

A BI Farewell luncheon will take place at the Plaza Hotel on Friday after the conclusion of courses. The Institute will wrap up here with presentation of course certificates, door prizes and more!
