British Institute 2023 is in-person in Salt Lake City, Utah.
How do I pay for BI?
You can pay by PayPal, debit or credit card - or by check made payable to ISBGFH and mailed to our treasurer. Mail to: Barbara Scanlon, 5050 Main Street, Apt. 511, Kansas City, MO 64112. Please note which courses you are registering for by printing this Course Checklist and including it with your payment. Checks need to be postmarked by September 30, 2023. Note that PayPal will process other forms of payment, so if you are paying by debit or credit card, you do not need to have a PayPal account to use PayPal’s service to register for BI.
Are there any additional fees or charges?
If you are attending in person, the fee does not include travel to and from Salt Lake City, hotel stay, food or local transportation costs.
If only purchasing recordings and handout materials, there are no additional fees or charges. Your 20 hours of class time and handout are all included in the fee.
If I change my mind or something comes up, can I get a refund?
Cancellation policy - A refund will be issued upon written request / email request to the Institute Director before September 30, 2023 at 11:59pm MDT. There will be a $50 service charged for cancelling. Beginning October 1, 2023, no refunds will be issued. Registrations are not transferable to another person or for future events.
I am a beginner to genealogy, can I attend?
Our instructors are accustomed to teaching to genealogists of all skill and experience levels, but these courses are geared toward the intermediate. We can recommend some basic free courses thru FamilySearch.org that can help prepare you for the British Institute. I see you are offering 3 classes, how many can I register for?
We are holding BI live in Salt Lake City, Utah the week of 9 - 13 October 2023. You may purchase class materials (recording and syllabus) for all 3 classes if you like, but you can attend only one in-person. Members receive a discount if they register for Early Bird pricing during the month of May. See all the British Institute pricing here.
Are there any handouts or prerequisites? or what can I expect to receive?
A robust handout will be sent as a PDF for you to download and print prior to the start of BI. Any other prerequisites are based on instructor preferences, and details will be sent in advance of BI courses beginning.
If I purchase access to recordings, when will they be available for viewing?
Recordings will be available for viewing on the Monday following the completion of BI. There is a discount when purchasing more than one course recording. See all the British Institute pricing here.
Will we have access to class lists and contact information of the instructors?
Those who opt in will be included on a class list that will be available to others in the class. Your instructor will provide information on how to contact them.

Meet 'n Greet, 6:30 p.m. Sunday, 8 October 2023 with classes running from 9 - 13 October 2023, 8 a.m. to noon (MST)
Location and Lodging
When in person, British Institute is held annually at The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah, just steps away from the FamilySearch Library. There is a block of rooms reserved for registered attendees on a first-come, first-served basis. To receive the hotel discount, please call Mr. Williams at (801) 606-2410 and state you are attending British Institute.
The classrooms and Sunday evening Meet 'n Greet are located in the hotel, with the exception of the England course, which will be held at the FamilySearch Library. The hotel also has an indoor parking garage.
A BI Farewell luncheon will take place at the Plaza Hotel on Friday after the conclusion of courses. The Institute will wrap up here with presentation of course certificates, door prizes and more!
